Downtown
The grimy, dark earth-bound layer of Canus
Below the disk, Downtown Canus (pop. 24000) sprawls across the ground’s surface in the shadow of Uptown’s disk. Downtown is a muddy, dim patchwork of gritty neighborhoods for laborers, craftspeople, guilds, unions and the desperate and disenfranchised, almost fully denuded of plants because of the nearly continuous shade. The Halls of Justice, the Municipal Prison, and the Infernal Embassy hug the base of the Glimmercrystal shaft. Mills for flour, lumber, and stone grinding line the shore of Blackfen river, flowing from the north and out the southern city limits. In the southeast quadrant of Downtown, the Flare is a neighborhood of tieflings built around an elemental pool of lava. They harvest the molten rocks for home-heating and craftspeople’s furnaces that keeps the city producing fine metalwork, blown glass, and ceramics.
