Freecraftsman refers to fraternal organizations that trace their origins to the local guilds of Artificers that, from the end of the earliest century, regulated the qualifications of artificers and their interaction with authorities and clients. Freecraftsman have been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories throughout the years. Modern Artificers broadly consists of two main recognition groups:

The Elder Artificers= Only Artificers who have practiced all their lives

Apprenticed Artificers= Artificers who also want to teach others who want to learn the craft of artificing and those who may also have dabbled in other classes.

The degrees of Artificers retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Apprentice, Journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Artificer. The candidate of these three levels is progressively taught the meanings of the symbols of Artificers and entrusted with grips, signs, and words to signify to other members that he or she has been so initiated. The levels are part allegorical morality play and part lecture. Three levels are offered by Craft (or Freecraftsman) Master Artificers, and members of any of these degrees are known as Artificers or Apprentice Artificers. There are additional degrees, which vary with locality and jurisdiction, and are usually administered by their own bodies (separate from those who administer the Craft degrees).
