Della
Lynndella Kailina Adria III of Calaloch
Della is a 25 year old Mermaid Water Genasi. She is friendly, easy-going, and kind. She is trying to find her purpose and place in the world. She’ll try new things and probably fail often in her pursuits. She loves baths and making camp near rivers or lakes because she needs to be in water regularly. She believes fiercely in fate and destiny and worships most gods to some extent, but primarily Melora, Kord, and Avandra. She celebrates holidays with vigor and loves learning about how other celebrate holidays. Although she has a sunny disposition, she knows when to take things seriously and her positive attitude fails her when those she cares about are threatened. She’ll try to be everyone’s friend first, up until they are mean to or threaten her or someone she cares about.
Della is Chaotic Good [Chaotic good creatures act as their conscience directs, with little regard for what others expect]. She moves through the world with the purpose to do good and is drawn to helping others. She will follow laws simply to avoid trouble, unless said laws are ridiculous. She has no issue challenging authority, tyranny, and those who stand opposed to freedom - although she’d rather do so with friends rather than alone. She sees most of the world, morally wise, in grey scale.
COMMUNITY & HOME TOWN
Della is from the underwater city of Calaloch {Cal-la-lock, meaning a good place to land}. It is a small city with a population of about 3,220. It was first founded by the Adria people to defend a rift between the planar dimensions. The community and city continues to protect the rift.
The Adria people are a community of unique merfolk who are descendants of both water genasi and mermaids and have the ability to not only breathe water and air, like other merfolk, but also transform between their Mer and Genasi forms to survive on both. However, being away from water for more that a few days can cause Adria to experience high levels of fatigue and even prolonged time out of water can mean they loose the ability to turn back into the Mer form.
Although not many above the water know of Calaloch, it is well know to merfolk from other communities across Taldorei. In Calaloch, its common for people to leave home and spend time on land, especially to attend specialty schools or learn trades, but most return home to keep their community thriving and serve their ancestral duty of protecting the Rift.
FAMILY
The Kailina family is a tight-knit family with six kids (Lyndella, Leven, Locklan, Lyla, Laguna, Luca). Her parents (Lynndella and Lusca) both come from large families, so Della grew up with lots of cousins, aunts, and uncles. Della’s mom, also named Lynndella, is a high ranking Horizon Walker, largely responsible to protecting the rift and has a relationship with the Ashari. Her father, Lynel, is a teacher.
Della is well schooled and even well trained in above water society and politics. She visited above water cities along the Menagerie coast many times with her family growing up. Della’s maternal grandmother, the first Lyndella, was a famous sorcerer who possessed Tempest Magic from the Rift like Della. Her Grandma went to the same school that Della later attended and is the main reason Della chose to leave home for school.
One of her Uncle’s on fathers side is a well known pirate and Revelry governing member who Della looks up to. He often returns home to tell of his adventures, but Della only hears the PG version. In reality, he’s really more of a Barbossa type.
SCHOOL
Della left home about 4 years ago to attend the Mirkwood Academy of Magic and Alchemy in the city of Nicodranas on the Menagerie Coast. She returned home regularly while on breaks from School but took her education seriously. She made a lot of friends at school and loved exploring Nicodranas alone and with friends. Because Della loves celebrating holidays, she often made it her mission to make sure her friends took time off school to celebrate and even planned multiple gatherings.
Two years into her studies in one of her advanced magic classes something terrifying happened. “The Incident”, as she now refers to it, happened in the middle of a packed classroom during a subject she’s naturally gifted in. The professor called on her for a demonstration and a surge of something like Wild Magic caused a rift to the Netherdeep to open and spill deep black water and dark energy into the classroom. It was accompanied by the voice of something ancient and terrifying, noises that sounded like screaming, visions of destruction, and felt like she was summoning or calling forward some being of immense power. The teacher dispelled the magic and no property was damaged and no one was hurt. The faculty all said that it was nothing to worry about, just wild magic that she would learn to control. However, the professors also told her take a break from casting anything strenuous for a while. One professor, Benedict (a Lupin type), encouraged her to explore it and figure it out and told her he will help however he can. Della returned home after the incident and told her family and some community leaders that she fears it was some kind of warning. They say they don’t really know what it could mean but it was likely a byproduct of her learning to control her abilities and if anything, perhaps a sign of her having great power to protect them like her grandmother.
Della returned to school adamant that she will figure out what the incident meant and hopeful that all will be well. Benedict paired her with Cassandra as a research partner in the library and she comes to their after class practices, watching Della attempt different magics and even try to open the rift again and recording it for posterity. Della begins to spend all her time in the library with Cassandra and with Benedict outside of classes, becoming obsessed with the Rift and her magic. She neglects her friends, social clubs, course work, and even herself. As she begins having nightmares and subsequent panic attacks about the magic rift (Apotheon reaching out to her beyond the veil) she becomes more withdrawn. She falls behind in her classes which eventually leads to her getting kicked out of school.
PIRATE LIFE
A couple weeks later, unable to make herself return home to Calaloch, she decides she needs a break from magic and to pursue something new. So she goes to the port in Nicodranas and watches the incoming and outgoing ships and decides to try and join a the lively looking crew aboard the False Jewel. She mostly hides her magic abilities, only showing that she has a connection to water and convinces the captain that she can be a useful addition to her team because of her water magic, knowledge of the area, and personable quality. Della spends 6 months on the ship, making friends with crew, and in particular a boy closer to her age Luzon. She enjoys the crew and being on the water, but realizes she doesn’t love all elements of Piracy. She is good at dealing in trade, negotiating, distracting, and even learns fight a little better with her double-sided trident. She does very little magic during her time as a pirate.
When Amira is mutinied, Della has a panic attack at the thought of needing to do magic to escape or help fight and winds up hiding to avoid the conflict entirely. She is only able to get away while Amira is being tied up. Della sees Luzon with Olentra before diving into the water and saving Amira. They are stranded for weeks as Della carries them both to shore and once they make it to Port Demali, she take Amira to a healer. Seeing the crew’s bodies in the water becomes her new nightmare and showed her that she should have done something; it is her impetus to start casting again and continue to learn about her magic and train her abilities.
In the last year, Della has been travelling around the Menagerie Coast, reconnecting with school friends or making new ones who let her crash with them. She has decided to try out the adventuring life and has spent most of her time just helping others for free. She has done a few sus but profitable missions that gained her enough money to survive on her own the past year. She’s even seen Amira a few times for fun or to help with quests. She’s also been practicing her magic and fighting down the fear of the opening the rift again. It seems like her time away from magic really helped pull her out of the nightmares. They still happen sometimes though, but mostly she can handle them.
