While in Trostenwald, Benedict asked Della to consider using the strange red dust they found in the Wildewinds field to attempt to channel her connection to Rift. Though the party was initially concerned with this, Della agreed to trust Benedict and try it. When consuming the dust unaltered, she felt a split in her power, with a dark well of shadows forming in the pit of her stomach, while the rest of her power coursed through her body. Drawing on this new well, she opened a rift, black and cold, in the middle of the field, which Benedict first put a hand in safely, and then walked into. While inside, he said he could see dots of light in the distance but was almost swimming instead of walking. The final test was to see if Benedict’s theory about this being a path around and through the planes was correct. He swam into the Rift and had Della close it. While he was in there, she could sense his location and when he wanted out. With another draw of the power, she opened a new Rift and Benedict returned, some 30 feet behind where he started. Before the implications and excitement of this teleportation could be fully realized or celebrated, another rift, independent of Della’s split the sky and a white fleshed, tentacled monster, streaked with red veins and a disfigured, human face emerged and attacked, bringing with it the screams that are familiar with these uncontrolled Rifts, though it retreated after taking several sustained hits of damage.
