Trostenwald
The moderately sized settlement of Trostenwald lies at the southern outskirts of the Dwendalian Empire, on the banks of the Ustaloch, serving as a significant trade hub for the surrounding agricultural communities. The seeds of civilization were planted here nearly two centuries ago when the fair weather and stretching grain fields gave rise to a booming brewing economy. Its central location makes it a crucial waypoint for merchants traveling through the region.
The city is divided into three sections: the Merchant’s Make, which makes up the center of the city where traveling and local merchants gather to peddle their wares. The southern side of the city is devoted to the Crown’s Reach, where the majority of citizens live under the watch of various government buildings, including Dwendalian Empire outposts. Finally, the north side of the city belongs to the brewers, in the Brewer’s Lot. The majority of the city’s inns and taverns sit in this section, which gained fame and popularity from the three major families of brewers and alewives noted as producing some of the best and most unique ales Dwendalians had ever tasted.
Ordering a “trost” has become common terminology in many taverns that serve the unique, sweeter ales of the settlement’s breweries. Many attribute the distinctive flavor to the waters of the nearby Ustaloch, while others attribute the flavor to an enchantment on the nearby soils hearkening back to the Age of Arcanum. Regardless, the ale has become the flagship export for the settlement, causing tension between competing families. The reigning three breweries fight for dominance over farmland and promotion of their products, while occasionally allying to squash out any upstarts who wish to encroach on the already crowded market. The known family brands that produce Trostenwald ale are Husseldorf, Bambauch, and von Brandt. More recently, the Wildewind family has established a new brand of ales in the city, using magical components to give their drinks a magical flair that walks the line between libation and potion.
Trostenwald is renowned for its annual Harvest Close Festival, a grand celebration of the autumn harvest. During this time, the city comes alive with vibrant decorations, music, and various competitions, attracting visitors from far and wide.
While Trostenwald enjoys relative stability and prosperity, tensions can arise due to the Dwendalian Empire’s strict control and the occasional presence of nefarious elements. However, the people of Trostenwald have learned to adapt, fostering a resilient spirit that has allowed them to thrive despite the challenges they face.
The city is headed by Starosta Fryda Langer, daughter of the last starosta who fell to illness two years ago. Her family has strong ties to the Bambauch family, leading some to mutter of favoritism, though they have no power to challenge her. Starosta Langer enjoys her position, often making public shows of her power by holding small celebrations and contests in her honor. Those she did not favor before taking office are rumored to have disappeared or been driven into poverty.
Overall, Trostenwald embodies the essence of a lively and prosperous trade city nestled amidst picturesque farmlands, where adventure and camaraderie can be found alongside hard work and celebration.
