Session 26, 6/25/2021
The next morning we regrouped at the Roc’s Nest and reviewed what had happened the day prior. The ghost of Gavin Tarramor was very strong and a direct confrontation seemed perilous at best. And the actions of his mother’s ghost gave us the impression that simply destroying him may not end the curse and haunting. We have a feeling that if we could get all 3 ghosts together and somehow get the ghosts of Gavin and Orson to see Elean then she would put an end to the fighting.
With that thought in mind we prepared ourselves and headed out to the manor. Pacha had a good idea that if we cast detect magic and the used wind walk we could quickly fly through the house in mist form and search out any sources of magic. If we found any, perhaps they would be tied to the ghosts and help us in dealing with them.
We performed the scouting mission as he suggested. We located several sources of magic in the upper attics of the house and 1 source on the ground floor that appeared to be lyre in the ball room. We also saw several creatures in different rooms and 1 teenager hidden in what appeared to have been the master suite. She looked to be a common street urchin. She was crouched down low with her arms wrapped around herself as though she were trying to hide or protect herself.
With the most sources of magic in the attic we decided to start there. It would also put us fairly close to the young lady to be able to try and assist her hopefully.
We used the wind walk to move all of use to the attic and assumed solid shape in a small room that was isolated from the rest of the attic. Sylrel cast a spell that would allow her to track Gavin’s location so we could try and avoid him or at the very least be prepared if he decided to meddle with us.
The small room appeared to have been last used as a sick room for someone who had been deathly ill. The bed was incredible soiled and the room stunk of death. Aside from that though, the room was almost bare. Lacking any humanizing touches or decorations you might normally see in a room used to care for someone. The room only had 1 door, so we proceeded out of if.
The next room was a small entry area. It had the door back to the sick room and a set of stairs going down. There was a cabinet and also a small table. The table held a journal that was written by the servants of the house. It was mostly a record of the care provided Gavin as he was dying. The servants wrote with some astonishment about how little Gavin’s father seemed to care for what his son was going through. What was even more astonishing was that it was quite apparent from the writings in the journal that the disease, although ultimately deadly, appeared to be a common one that could have been treated by a mundane healer. But Gavin’s father refused to send for one.
At this point, Sylrel alerted us that Gavin was on the move and was quickly approaching our location. She pointed to where she thought he would come through the floor and we all moved into position to be able to blast him as soon as he showed himself. When he moved up through the floor we surprised him with a flourish of attacks before he could react. We then landed another round before he had a chance to retaliate. He launched a quick attack at Pacha, but then faded through the floor and left the way he had come.
From this area we went down the stairs and entered a library. We had seen one of the sources of magic in this room so we searched that area of the bookshelves. While doing so we were attacked by a poltergeist similar to the other day. It was quickly defeated and we finished our search. We located the magic item and identified it as a Tome of Clear thought. Something that we could not use right away, but which might interest The Professor if we could locate him again.
From the library we head over to the living quarters to see if we could rescue the girl. The young lady was terribly frightened when we entered the room but I managed to soothe her and explain that we were not there to hurt her. It turns out she was a local from town who had entered the house on a dare. We kept her as calm as possible and quickly escorted her to the balcony we had exited from the other day. Pacha lowered he down to the ground and she quickly fled into the night.
At that point, we decided to take the short cut back into the main part of the attic. There was a hole in the celling that Pacha had investigated yesterday. He lifted us up one by one through the hole and then climbed up after us. The hole led to a small store room so we quickly exited it to the hallway. From our earlier scouting we new that there was a large room to the west that held at least one source of magic as well as several rooms to the east.
We headed to the room to the north. The room was quite large. It appeared to have a lot of older furniture that had been put into storage. There was also numerous people sized cocoons hanging from the ceiling and (we knew from our earlier scouting) a monster hiding in the shadows in the north west corner.
I entered the room and walked to the middle of it to try and draw the creature out. It worked and the creature jumped out thinking it had surprised us, but the group was ready. If we had been taken by surprise it may have been a nasty fight, but the creature was clearly and ambush hunter of some sort and stood no chance in a stand up fight.
After defeating the creature we spread out to search the room. At that point Elean’s ghost made an appearance. She materialized and repeated her same litany as before. Evelios tried to communicate with her and it is difficult to tell if she understood him, but she did point out a painting that was wrapped up for storage. Evelios unwrapped it and it turned out to be a portrait of Elean. It looked to be the right size to fill in the space of the missing portrait in the entry hall.
We also found several magic items. A powerful weapon, a Dwarven Thrower warhammer, a mithril breastplate and several potions of greater healing.
Session 27, 7/2/2021
As we left the last storage rooms, The Professor surprised us by walking around a corner. He had finally gotten to feeling better and had asked Gharrus at the Roc’s nest where we were. Gharrus told him we had been asking about the Tarramor family and she thought we were likely at their old estate. He had heard us fighting from outside and had climbed up the front balcony and into the attic. It seemed a bit more athletic than what I would normally think of for The Professor, but we were glad to see him none the less.
I quickly filled The Professor on our current state. That we had the old painting of Elean that we thought matched up with a painting of Orson and Gavin in the entry way as well as the old locket. We thought if we could replace the painting we could summon Elean, Orson and Gavin and she would put an end to the feud and the ghosts would rest.
Sylrel informed us that Gavin was clear of the entry way, so we quickly hurried down stairs. We wanted to try out our idea and avoid a confrontation if possible. We spread out a bit, in case Gain showed up and attacked, and then Evelios placed the picture on the wall.
Elean showed up and said she would try and end the conflict between her son and husband. She said we should only try and survive until she succeeded. Gavin then showed up, followed shortly by Orson. They both moved to attack the group and at first seemed oblivious to Elean.
Elean called out to Gavin, commanding him to see her and to listen to her. That there was no reason for the continued strife. It took only a few moments, but then it was like he was finally able to see her. He was both confused and overjoyed, but he listened to her and left off of his attacks and went to stand by her.
Orson did not succumb so quickly. Pacha, afraid that Orson would take too long to come to his senses, sprinted for the basement to retrieve the chains that had been used to bind him before. Right as he was returning, Orson finally recognized his wife and quit his attack against us. He moved to join his wife and son and they ascended the stairs, fading out of site.
We had done it, we had destroyed our first member of the Council of Bones. At least, we thought we had. I went into an immediate panic, concerned that The Reaper might make an appearance right afterwards. We cast a magic circle on the ground in the middle of the entry hall and gathered inside it. We waited for the entire duration of the spell, but The Reaper never appeared.
Nervous, and unsure of would happen next, we decided we would return to the Roc’s Nest and rest if possible.
