Group of characters
The Huldra:
A forest spirit, who acts as a guardian of the forest they reside in. They’re always female and has a tendency to either reward good/fair hunters (or to lure men to their death). They look young and beautiful with their long hair, filled with flowers and branches. However their back is hollow and looks like a hole in a tree.
The Grim:
It is a caretaker of graveyards/shrines from old times, but most people associate it with death. The rumor goes that if you see a Grim, you or someone you know will die within the year.
Nokken:
A beautiful white horse that resides near lakes and rivers. It’s back elongates so it can fit as many riders as needed, but once you mount it you can’t get off and then the Nokken goes into the river or pond to drown you and feast on your bones.
The Brook Man:
He lives beneath the small waterfalls and snatch children who play by the brook. He can change size and sometimes he will look like a mossy rock by the brook. When the children jump on the rocks he will swallow them in a second while no one is looking.
The Nattmara:
They are young, short, slender females, with long black hair and nails. They can fit through the narrowest crack, and if you’re plagued by vivid nightmares, it’s usually because a Nattmara have taken a liking to you and is now riding your chest each night. It can be quite difficult to get rid of a Nattmara.
Myling:
Are children who have died but never got buried. If you meet one in the wild, you better run. They’ll jump on your back and hold on, until you get it to the graveyard. However they become heavier and heavier the closer you get.. If you don’t manage to bury the Myling at a graveyard, it will kill you.
Trolls:
Trolls roam the forests, but hide underground during the day. If they are touched by daylight they turn to stone. If you see a mound of grass in the forest, it might be a troll hiding from the sun beneath the moss.
They are known to take children and raise them as trolls. The child will be safe if it is named within a week.
The Alfer:
They are the ancestor of the Elves, most closely related to Wood Elves. They’re light as a feather, almost transparent, are very androgynous and lives in the forest. They’re rather playful, not sinister at all and seldom talks. However they do sing.
If you please them, you might get invited to an Alva feast!
Lantern Men:
In swamps and forests you might sometimes see a dim light, shining and moving around. If you follow it you could find your destiny. Be it death or fortune. Lantern Men are a gamble.
If you point, they will move towards you. First there’s just the one.. then you see two.. then more..
Few have seen the Lantern Men up close, but it is said they’re small slender creatures with a round lantern as their face.
Serpents:
Some are like large snakes and others like wyverns and drakes. Their sizes differs from that of a Dire Wolf, to that of an island. They have knowledge from when the realm was young and possesses magic unknown.
The most common to see is Orm, which is a miles long sea serpent, with a jaw so grand it can swallow a whale. It usually remains peaceful.
