World Background
History Innit
- The world year is 330 PU (Post Undead). Though people were around before 0 PU, there is little to no recorded history. Year 0 began on the first day after what is known to most as the Lightless Years. These years were a bleak period of danger, darkness and dwarves famine, when a surge of undead broke out from the Underdark through the now ruins of Blackgate to ravage the surface world. Additionally, an unknown magical force blotted out the sun’s light, making it near impossible to grow crops and farm animals. Most civilisations were dissolved due to the loss in numbers and the lack of food to survive on - orcish tribes ran into the mountains, elves retreated into the forests, and humans tried to build up settlements where possible.
- The undead were mostly vanquished just before 0 PU by the combined power of the High Priests of all of the Holy Orders. This used a lot of divine power, causing the Gods to become depleted and weakened, quickly leading to emnity between many Holy Orders as they competed for followers to help restore the used power. The last of the surviving undead fled to caves and ruins, and rarely venture into the light. For this reason, most see caves as more dangerous than they’re worth and steer well clear.
- After the Lightless Years, due to the diminished population, cities began to show more diversity in their populations as those from destroyed civilisations had few places to go. Towns were rebuilt, but resources were still scarce, causing high international tensions to develop over time. An example of this is the Zambia-Rhodesia conflict, as they compete over resources, especially metals such as iron and gold.
