There are four suits in a deck of cards. Hearts, taking the place of cups; spades, taking the place of swords; diamonds, taking the place of pentacles and clubs, taking the place of wands. This is how it is, until it isn’t.
Since the mid-15th century, many sets have been trying to replace the original latin. In the royal deck of 1937, there was a crown suit. In the eagle deck of 1937, there was an eagle suit. In the five crowns deck of 1996, there was a star suit.
In some decks, this fifth suit takes the appearance of a shield.
