Blue Eyes
Bard
Blue Eyes (Francis Albert Louis Brightwood) originates from the Dragon Coast region which is located on the southern shore of the Dragonmere, and at the western extent of the Sea of Fallen Stars. Widely known cities include Westgate, Pros, Proskur, Elversult and Irieabor. All cities in the Dragon Coast are closely related to the important “Trader’s Road” which connects Thay in the East to The Sword Coast in the west and Cormanthor in the North to Amn in the South.
Dragon Coast History
The history of the Dragon Coast is the history of money, particularly the darker side of the coin. Situated on the main trade routes between the Inner Sea and the Sword Coast, these lands never coalesced into a solid, coherent nation, like Cormyr or Sembia. Instead small petty city-states have risen and fallen, powered by greed and the most powerful merchant or pirate faction of the day.
As a result, the Dragon Coast has always been the home of the smuggler, the pirate, the rogue, and the hired killer. It has been the place where those seeking to skirt the laws of the more civilized nations to the north make landfall. It is here that the Red Wizards gain their access to the Western Heartlands, and where the cult of the Dragon launches its plots to the south. And it is here that independent secret societies and assassins guild have their greatest power.
Westgate History.
This area of the Dragon Coast was first settled by humans from the Vilhon Reach roughly 1,000 years before the Standing Stone was erected in Cormanthor. The largest settlement was the human town of Westgate, ruled cruelly by the great topaz dragon Kisonraathiisar. In the Year of Bold Poachers, −349 DR, Saldrinar destroyed Kisonraathiisar and became Westgate’s first human king.
In the Year of Foul Awakenings, −286 DR, the vampire Orlak and a small army of mercenaries captured the city in a single night. Orlak proclaimed himself the Night King and ruled until he is defeated by a group of Lathander-worshiping paladins in the Year of Many Harvests, −157 DR.
In the Year of the Speaking Mountain, 257 DR, pirates from the Pirate Isles invaded Westgate and began the 200-year-long reign of the Pirate Kings.
By the Year of the Ageless One, 1479 DR, Westgate was one of the few free cities left on the Dragon Coast not occupied by either Cormyr or Sembia. In order to preserve its independence Westgate played both powers against each other, perhaps even supporting insurrections within Cormyr’s borders to stem its expansionism.
Blue Eyes History
Blue Eyes was born in a hamlet called Redwater on the coast of a giant lake called Redwater as well. The lake spans from Westgate to Reddansyr and connects to the Sea of Fallen Stars. About 350 people, mainly human, live in Redwater including most of the Brightwood family. Now, they own a dwelling and several other properties. Since the settlement was erected, the wealthy Brightwood family played an important role in the community as they are closely tied to the military residing in the naval fort.
The entire hamlet is generally happy with the military as they are the only defence against the pirates pouring into Redwater and goblins from the Giant’s Run Mountains in the West. The family’s defence readiness is virtually non-existent, so they rely heavily on the military which they support wherever they can.
The Brightwood family has a good name and their public ethical reputation matches their private ethics. They have no religious commitment. The family reputation is fair. They support the current political structure in Redwater but favour a change of rulers. Inside the family, the elders control the power, albeit loosely. An ancestor (Severus) is known to have betrayed a nearby outpost community, which is a closely kept secret within the family. The ancestor was found after several years by his siblings and brought to justice by the elders of the Brightwood family themselves. Severus left behind a case with an ancient scroll written in a strange language. It was rumoured to contain, or at least hint to the reason why he betrayed the outpost community to the raiding pirates. To this day, the content of the scroll is unknown [Possible DM hook].
In his youth, Blue Eyes was blessed with a formal education. He went to the tiny school in Redwater, so he was educated in courtly manners and etiquette, although school was not always available, as the settlement was raided often by pirates or goblins. All adults, including his teacher, were drafted into the military in these periods. Time spent on the streets without school taught Blue Eyes minor thievery and con games. When his father got hold of this new “career”, he sent him to the naval fort to teach him valuable lessons about honour and earning a living honestly. As a young boy, Blue Eyes did several jobs in the fort, running errands and being a messenger.
The general (Bimetz) saw the potential of this young boy who could swiftly and silently bring messages and Blue Eyes was secretly drafted into special military training as a scout. His tutor was a Halfling called Xodak. The relation grew over time and they made an oath to each other. Xodak kept his training a secret and when Blue Eyes had finished his training, Xodak could request a service from Blue Eyes. This request did not came to past yet [Possible DM hook].
Xodak’s training was meant to teach the boy to move sneakily and not to perform active scouting duties in the field, at first. However, time progressed and a huge raid on Redwater by a goblin army, lasting for the better part of a year, took place. This important youth event is known as the “Winter war” and drained most of the resources of both the fort and the community. The barely adult Blue Eyes had to aid in the defense of Redwater against the raiders by sneaking behind the enemy lines, learning their language, scouting for enemy numbers and predicting their next attack.
Another pivotal moment was the realisation by Blue Eyes that he could debrief his missions very vividly. Often, he was asked to tell his stories to entertain the military. Blue eyes added music to enhance these stories. In the beginning the general used this entertainer role as a cover for his duties as a messenger. As the entertainer became more and more of a public figure, he actually became known as Blue Eyes and being a secret messenger for the general became harder to maintain.
After the Winter war, Blue Eyes had the military training of a scout, but came out as a skilled entertainer. He played his role as a military entertainer so well, he could earn a living and still be a messenger for his general (Bimetz) between Redwater and Westgate and the other cities on the Trader’s Road at the Dragon Coast. This was approved by his family, who saw an opportunity for Blue Eyes to finally discover the contents of the ancient scroll of the betrayer in the family, which is unsuccessful to this day [Possible DM hook].
Eventually the entertainer traveled enough to learn that the world is a big place with many different people. Blue Eyes left the military and became a bard in this period and choose to go to the College of Valor, which suited his earlier career in the military as a scout well. Needles to say, he met several very interesting people there, many of which are famous bards nowadays [Possible DM hook].
Today, Blue Eyes has 2 living parents, no siblings. Parents of his father are alive, the parents of his mother are deceased. There are about 14 other members of his family. Blue Eyes has had few true friends. As a bard this seems a contradiction, but most of his contact with people are because of his fame and glory. Blue Eyes is aware of this and picks his friends with great care. Luckily, his friendship with the party members is steadily growing into friends he trusts with his life. As far as Blue Eyes is concerned, there is no greater camaraderie.
To conclude, Blue Eyes had only one enemy: the ruler of the council of Redwater called Bizir Naste. It is not known outside the Brightwood Family, but the family favours a change of rulers. Blue Eyes once satirized the ruler (and his father-in-law) by calling him a goatfucker. A mistake he will likely repeat. The Brightwood Family was unofficially delighted by this satire. Obviously, Naste was angered by this, because he felt betrayed by his son-in-law, but to such an extent, he even wanted the head of Blue Eyes. The relation between Blue Eyes and his daughter (Amely) was ended, obviously. Still, Blue Eyes has one of the earrings of his one true lover [Possible DM hook]. Blue Eyes saw no other option to leave Redwater to de-escalate the conflict and thereby protect his family from officially having to choose between their own son and their ruler. Whether the head of Blue Eyes is still wanted is unknown [Possible DM hook]. The only reason for Blue Eyes to return to Redwater is to seek out his former lover, to tell the story of the ancient scroll or by request from his former tutor [Several Possible DM hook’s].
Blue Eyes fled to Westgate, which is a week away on horseback. As mentioned, Westgate was a seedy and squalid metropolis—with a history in piracy, powerful crime syndicates, and nameless vampiric crime-lords. Westgate thrived on black-market trade and corruption, and was perhaps one of the most sordid cities in all of Faerûn. The legacy of scoundrels and spies was found in every alley, and danger lurked for the unprepared in every corner. It was an open city that welcomed all travelers and citizens alike as long as they abided by the local laws and, of course, had enough coin. It was probably the oldest, richest and most corrupt port on the Sea of Fallen Stars. It received the nickname “Gateway to the West” from its role as the Inner Sea’s most prolific port city. Blue Eyes had no problem blending in the city, for he new it well from his days as a messenger. Never did the followers of Bizir Naste find him. On the other hand, Blue Eyes did not find any evidence of being followed as well. He assumed being out of the Redwater was enough for his ex father-in-law or possible his wealthy family had made certain arrangements [Possible DM Hook].
Blue Eyes in Westgate.
After a while Blue Eyes met the street performer Jamal. Jamal is widely known for her satire versus the current ruling and corrupt houses. Satire is forbidden in Westgate, but always she manages to prevent from being arrested. Other houses probably have a hand in assuring her voice is not silenced. She is famous and loved among the population in Westgate and imprisoning a popular and influential bard works counterproductive.
Blue Eyes has great respect for Jamal for several reasons, but the most important one is that she stands ground for what she believes in and fights for her city. Blue Eyes has done nothing of the sort in Redwater, at least, so he believes. Jamal loves “her” city and is torn with sorrow with the ever growing corruption of the houses and the criminal guild. For fourteen years, these dreaded “Night Masks” have ruled the city from the shadows. When Blue Eyes crossed swords with the underlings of the cunning, heartless Lord of Westgate’s criminal guild (known only as The Faceless) he vows to help Jamal and rid Westgate of the maleficent Night Masks and its Lord [Possible DM hook].
Blue Eyes travels to Cormyr to seek help from the Harper’s and meets his new comrades.
