Nathaniel Malorn
Cleric of Helm
Early history
Nathaniel and his twin sister Cereen were born on Shieldmeet 1468 under unique circumstances in Ashabenford, Mistledale. Their mother, Helen Malorn, was seduced by a mysterious and handsome stranger. Under the shining constellation of Helm the twins were conceived and afterwards their father disappeared in a flash of light, or at least that is what their mother says. The people of Ashabenford are not so sure.
Their suspicion was quickly assuaged soon after the birth of the twins, their angelic nature was easily seen by any who saw them. This makes the twins well known, at least in Ashabenford.
Helen married Gadral Nystorn, a Rider of Mistledale, when the twins were 12 and he saw himself as their surrogate father. The twins had a happy childhood. Both were very much into music and got lessons from a local bard — Cereen learning to play the Dulcimer while Nathaniel preferred the Lyre. They kept asking questions about their farther, questions their mother couldnʼt (or wouldnʼt?) answer.
Their first adventure
From a young age Cereen felt a duty toward the people of Ashabenford, and the Dalelands in general, but she was still a young girl with all the impulses and teenage rebellious behavior that came with it. When the twins were 17 years old, Cereen wanted to travel to Shadowdale to go to the big Midsummer celebration where her favorite bard would be playing. Helen had forbidden her of going to Shadowdale and so Cereen decided to sneak out at night and go anyway. She woke Nathaniel and asked him to join her; it wasnʼt very hard to persuade Nathaniel, as he too wanted to see the festivities. So they left a note for their mother and Gadral not to worry, and together they traveled through the forest of Cormanthor, following the river Ashaba upstream towards Shadowdale.
Their journey was pleasant and uneventful. They fished in the river and hunted in the forest, and after two days of travel they exited the forest, passed the old tower of Elminster and reached the town of Shadowdale. On the central town square the festivities were already well on their way: children were riding ponies and playing carnival games, adults were drinking ale and wine in the sun, and there was music everywhere. In the evening Cereenʼs favorite bard would be playing, so they had time to find an inn and freshen up for the big concert.
The concert was amazing, and the twins danced and drunk and sang along and had the best time of their lives. On the way back to the inn they took a shortcut through a dark alleyway where 4 human teenagers blocked their way: two in front, and two blocking their escape. They were touching the silver hair of Cereen and commented that they never had seen a girl like her, and would show her “a good time”. Two of the boys grabbed Cereen and tried to drag her off while the other boys pulled out their daggers, laughed and said they would kill the boy and then take their turn with the girl.
Nathaniel tried to fight the two boys but was no match and saw the other two take off with his sister. Panicked and angry and severely hurt he uttered a simple word and radiant energy exploded from him, almost killing his captors who immediately fled away, eyes big of fear and awe. He ran after his sister and together they fought off the remaining boys, beating both of them unconscious. They stumbled to the inn, arms around their shoulders to support each other, where Cereen felt a holy presence come to her. She laid her hand on the head of her brother and felt a glowing, warm, healing energy surge through her, instantly healing her brother. After a long night she woke up to find herself healed as well.
The next morning they went to the authorities to report the attack, and decided to quickly go home again.
They were grounded for a month, but their bond was stronger than ever.
Joining the Knights of Myth Drannor
After their encounter in Shadowdale, and unbeknownst to the twins, they were watched quite carefully by the Knights of Myth Drannor. The knights are an organization dedicated to protecting the Dalelands and travellers near Myth Drannor especially. The presence of twin Aasimar warranted careful investigation. Cereen and Nathaniel, meanwhile, were being trained in martial arts by some of the Riders of Mistledale that were stationed in Ashabenford.
On their eighteenth birthday the twins decided to celebrate by having a picnic in the forest, they packed their things and left. Wandering far into the woods, which held few secrets to them as they had traveled through them often, they ended up in a beautiful glade with some old ruined tower. They set up their tent near the tower and spent the evening talking about their plans for the future.
That night they were rudely awakened by a scream of pure agony erupting from the tower basement. The twins didnʼt hesitate for a moment, grabbed their weapons and charged into the tower. Dashing down the treacherous stairs they erupted into a partially collapsed basement where they found a half-elf, tied to a rack, being tortured by a scantily clad, red-skinned woman with horns and a tail.
Fury lit the eyes of the twins while they rushed towards the devil, they ran so quickly they almost seemed to fly. Nathaniel, having been trained as an acolyte of Helm, went to grab his shield, with the eyed gauntlet symbol of Helm, from his back and softly gasped as he noticed the spectral angelic wings sprouting from his shoulders. He invoked the name of the Watcher as he prayed for his blessing. The devil turned around and her eyes opened wide in dismay as she saw the twins descending down upon her as angelic avengers. The battle was over before it began as the twins felt empowered by their celestial nature and the blessing of Helm. It was Cereen who dealt the final blow as she smote it with the full fury of the Vigilant One himself.
It was that day they learnt of their full powers — as Paladin, Cleric and Aasimar. Unfortunately they also learnt of grief and regret. They were too late, the half- elf had died of his wounds. In the basement they found the remains of another half-elf, her tortured form cruelly misshapen by the devil. They took the belongings from the half-elves and swore to use them to protect others from similar fates. Their weapons and armor would serve as a reminder as to why they had to remain ever vigilant.
After burying the bodies they left the tower and found several warriors looking through their tent. They were greeted warmly and after explaining what had happened the warriors announced themselves as Knights of Myth Drannor sent to look for them as they had accidentally wandered into the ruins of Cormanthor. They invited the twins to join their order and help safeguard the Dales.
