Bollabar used the Stone of Golorr to ask about this dark wizard that looms over Waterdeep and where he came from, which allowed the stone to show Bollabar a vision of a City guard, probably 300 years ago, seeking to pull a reclusive wizard she called Manshoon out of his office, claiming that he was needed to guide the king through a brewing war. Manshoon had lost someone recently, it seemed, and had become obsessed with the idea of bringing them back through magical means. When the guard tried to suggest that this might not be possible, the Wizard turned from his room covered in arcane scribblings to look at her, his irises huge and swollen, blotting out the whites of his eyes as he said “no, we just need a different material…and a catalyst” before the vision faded.
