Session 2, 10/16/2021
In the morning the group met in the Inn for breakfast and to plan their day. As the group ate, Jerry Beard related a strange dream he had the previous evening. In the dream he was in a dark room and there was a lady chained to the floor struggling to escape.
As the group finished eating, they were approached by Ysildea, a generally grumpy disquieting older woman. She appeared to have some sort of knowledge that had caused her to seek us out. After verifying with Sylrel that the group was indeed attempting to right a wrong done to an innocent woman, she promptly sat down and attached herself to the group.
Before leaving the inn, Ysildea also managed to insult several random people and to frighten the crap out of Kevin Drayer, causing him to upset Gideon Graymantle‘s table and cause him have an outburst about the difficulties of his current case.
The group left the Roc’s Nest and headed into town to the Temple of Tyr. On the way, they broke up a fight between some local kids. A group of 3 seemingly middleclass boys were harrasing a poor girl. The group broke up the fight and sent the kids on their way. They revealed that they were all heading to Fulram Madheart, apparently a school or teacher of some sort.
Upon arriving at the Temple of Tyr, the group was surprised to see how run down behind on maintenance the temple ground appeared. Even the graves appeared to not be well maintained or cared for by family members.
The doors were unlocked, so the group proceeded inside and met Lorien Yost in the main church.
The group interviewed Lorien Yost to attempt to determine what he knew about Ravenna and the falsified documents that lead to her punishment. He came off as though he was nervous and perhaps hiding things. Ysildea attempted to apply pressure, first by saying prayers that she thought would give the impression he was lying and then by repeatedly violating his personal space, while Lormin asked him a series of questions on both the case as well as his background as the steward of the temple.
Lorien did reveal that the documents that had previously been in the Temple of Tyr had been transported to the Town Library and that they could be viewed there.
He also explained that the rundown nature of the church grounds was due to him being the sole caretaker of the Temple of Tyr. When he was made the steward of the temple, he dismissed the old steward and all of the old acolytes. He said this was due to his great need and desire for quiet and solitude.
As the conversation progressed, someone noticed stairs in the back of the church and asked if they could go down. Lorien Yost forbade it, so of course Ysildea headed straight down the stairs as Lormin continued to attempt to distract him. Lorien Yost used a hold person spell to prevent her going down the stairs, but as soon as she broke free of it, she continued down the stairs.
The bottom floor of the church was crypt with a number of tombs. The tombs had been recently vandalized and marked with demonic runes. A group member was able to recognize enough of the runes to understand them to be just harmless defacement.
Also in the basement was another person, a human female named Jarus. Another round of questioning began. She admitted to having a relationship to the church of Tyr, but would not elaborate. When pressed on the condition of the church and the tombs, she asked if the group would like to assist in cleaning up.
At some point Ysildea and Jerry Beard headed upstairs to continue searching the church. This made Lorien Yost very upset and he followed. Ysildea and Jerry Beard found his personal quarters and proceeded to “toss this place like a maximum security cell on lockdown”.
During the search, Ysildea discovered a necklace with likely magic properties and promptly took it in full view of Lorien Yost. He again used a hold person spell on her to restrain her and retrieve her property, at which point she left the room and began climbing the bell tower. At this point Lorien Yost said enough was enough and he attacked her with a damaging spell. She responded and there was a short battle and he disabled her. Jerry Beard then restrained Lorien Yost until an agreement was reached that he would heal her and in return the group would leave the temple.
At the same time the battle was taking place, Lormin was overcome with a desire to gather his friends and leave the temple immediately. The three left the basement and joined the group in the bell tower just as the agreement to leave was reached.
Ysildea was carried outside and Lorien Yost healed her. He also apprised the group that he would be contacting Constable Hawthorne and registering a complaint about the groups actions.
The group decided that it would be best to head to the Town Asylum and begin their investigation there as they had promised Kevin Drayer. They stopped on the way upon spying an acolyte of Tyr preaching on a street corner to listen in and then ask some questions afterwards. The group learned that the acolytes were allowed to visit the temple to worship, but could not assist in it’s maintenance or perform any ministries there. They also leaned that the former steward of the temple was Audley Soren, and that he could be found also preaching on a steet corner in town.
After finishing their conversation with the acolyte, the group was called over to a street vendor’s cart. The group found 2 old and worn masks for sale in the cart. Ysildea and Evelios Liriel each bought a mask. The street vendor said they would be absolutely necessary in the upcoming Carnival of Bones in 10 days that was held each month to ward off the undead. It is local custom to attend the festival while wearing a mask. The vendor only had 2 masks to sell, but let slip that the best masks in town could be found at Dlens for a hefty price.
As the group was getting directions to Dlens, a commoner came running from a side street screaming about the “undead are coming”. The crowd moved quickly to disperse, but it was obvious that this was a somewhat common occourence.
The group battled a group of 6 zombies. 1 commoner and the acolyte of Tyr they had spoken to were killed. Both Lormin and Jerry Beard were disabled during the course of the fight, but managed to survive thanks to Sylrel casting a healing spell on Lormin and stablizing Jerry Beard.
The townspeople re-appeared and thanked the group profusely. They had done a great deed, but, of course, “they were no Lorien Yost and friends”. The townspeople also said that Constable Hawthorne would be on his way to supervise cleanup and would love to talk to the group, which the group took as a sign it was time to move on.
Session 3, 10/23/2021
After a short rest, the group continued on their way to the Shadehill Asylum. Upon arriving the overheard a discussion between a maintenance person and a medical staff. The maintenance person was concerned about the treatment of the patients. Also, the party noted a strange guard before the door. An almost drone like or golem like person who showed no emotions.
The group entered the asylum and asked to see Kevin Drayer‘s dad. When told he couldn’t receive any visitors, the group asked to speak to Kohren Vhost about the possibility of committing their grandmother (Ysildea) so she could receive some help for her obvious mental ailments. The group was asked to follow one of the drones to see Kohren Vhost.
Sylrel, Evelios Liriel and Jerry Beard followed the drone. Ysildea headed down the stairs and Lormin followed, keeping up the act of he just being delusional and in need of help.
The upstairs group met Kohren Vhost, who promptly left to deal with the group in the basement. The did a little exploring and Jerry Beard snuck up to the next level and saw that it looked like a fairly standard ward/community room.
In the basement Ysildea began opening doors and avoided the grasp of the drones called to restrain her. She headed off down a passage. Lormin begged the staff present to go and “help grandma and make sure security did not hurt her”, hoping to be left alone. The staff instead ran to get Kohren Vhost.
When Kohren Vhost arrived he tried to convince Lormin to leave, and when that did not worked, he cast a charm spell on him of some sort to influence him to go.
Ysildea came moving quickly from where she had been and said it was time to go, so Lormin happily agreed and they went upstairs. The other three were on the way down and they all met up in the lobby. Ysildea performed a surprise attack on Kohren Vhost claiming he was a monster and had to die. Kohren Vhost cast a dimension door and escaped and the party left the asylum. Luckily the guards allowed them to leave and did not continue attacking.
After leaving the asylum, Lormin was overwhelmnd and returned to the Roc’s Nest. The other 4 continue on to Dlens to inquire after masks. They bought a bear mask for Lormin, a peacock mask for Sylrel, a Kohren Vhost mask for Ysildea, a black dragon mask for Jerry Beard and a Ivory Owl mask for Evelios Liriel. They need to return in 3 days to pick up their masks.
When everyone returned to the Roc’s Nest, Ysildea told the group that she had killed a woman in the basement of the Shadehill Asylum. The woman was strapped to an operating table and had killed her “as an act of mercy”.
Professor Jervis Mirrakle then arrived and relayed a number of local rumors about goings on at the Crowler Farm.
The group turned in for the night after a somewhat disturbing day.
