We were still sitting in the bar at the Dock Ward, trying to decide what to do, when suddenly a member of the City Watch approached Casmos to tell him he had been seen using magic before and all magic users in Waterdeep need to register or risk a 500 GP fine.
We followed him to the next City Watch station and had no choice but to register with an ancient dwarven bureaucrat, filling out some forms. The last page contained an application to the city’s magician’s guild/school, the “Watchful order of Magists and protectors”, which includes some benefits, such as access to libraries and magician’s classes, but comes with the obligation to aid in any investigations, if needed. We all received a neat little certificate to show our membership. Lyra was IN, the rest slightly annoyed.
Eldara asked for the Kenku blackbird and in fact, learned that they were probably working in the Castle Ward city watch now. Off we went! Gigi plucked out one of Casmos’ butt feathers. Lyra read some more fun facts about Waterdeep aloud. Casmos made her draw two cards from the Deck of Wonders he acquired that had random magical effects. We arrived at the city watch station to inquire about the Kenku – to learn that the Wanted poster was also hanging here. Stupid plan!
However, the City Watch seemed to be even stupiderer because they never made the connection that the Kenku on the poster was the very same
that was their apprentice all this time. Name: Qweewah.
Now it got interesting: He was wanted because he stole a binder full of magicians’ names from the registry. Possible motive: Find all the wizards in town. For what? And as expected, they called upon us to aid in the investigation. Lyra was super proud! Btw, we had the right to drink a beverage called coffee in any city watch station for the length of the investigation.
Next: Qweewah’s home in the seedy south ward, Coach street. A neighbor told us that when the Kenku left, he talked about a “higher calling on another plane of existence” and some more that sounded a lot like the Unseely Court. The apartment was abandoned in a hurry, only interesting thing left behind was a gold acorn.
We decided it was time to contact the Wild Hunt. We had 4 acorns at this point (1 that Caefaera found, 2 from the guild members, 1 from Qweewah’s apartment). Gigi, asked “We can use this to contact ANYONE in the Feywild?”, then went first and wrote a message to Karl: “How do you do? Xoxo). Caefaera sent a message to the Wild Hunt “Let’s meet up”.
Before we turned in for the night, Lyra copied her first spell in her spellbook “Haste”. Caefaera identified Casmos card deck and draw three cards.
The next morning, both messages were answered:
Caefaera: “Let’s talk face to face. Come to Harlow Driscoll’s shop this evening. Show the acorn for entrance.”
Gigi received a long message in which Karl retold his experiences. He had scored a position at the Summer Court as the “Keeper of Scrolls” (it’s very possible that this is a made up job and he is being kept as a pet). He hadn’t changed. He wanted to meet! And finally “Why didn’t you search for me sooner?”. Gigi put a cookie crumble in the acorn back.
Our plan for next time: Go to Elias and ask about the magic going crazy. Then Harlow. Then possibly Feywild.
Our puzzle pieces so far:
- Magic goes crazy sometimes
- The Kenku stole the wizard registry, then making off to the Unseely Court
- What does Harlow have to do with it? Acorn said “Deliver when ready” – does this mean she was making the Dragon Potion for the Court?
Quotes:
- Dwarf: “You need to fill out every field. Otherwise the apparatus cannot read it. It’s our IT”
- Casmos: “What’s IT”
- Dwarf: “Integrated Transmutation”
- City Guard guy is also called “Karl”, like Gigi’s husband.
- Casmos: “It’s a common name”
- Gigi: “He was a common guy”
- Eldara: “What I want? I nearly died – I want nothing.”
- Gigi: “You could die anytime. Ask for everything!”
