Despite their name and their use in conveying romantic messages to an inamorata or inamorato, these devices have a wider and more fundamental usage. The token allows the holder to effect a one-time verbal communication with the giver of the token; the duration of the communication is one hour, or until the holder of the token snaps it in half to end the link. Tokens can take any shape; common shapes are simple silver hearts, silver gilded feathers, a simple bronze ring, and so forth.
