Background
Early Life
Darion is the third son of Garviel Harrowstone and chosen heir to the renowned trading company “Harrowstone Mercantile”. He grew up in a life of relative luxury and received an extensive education in topics like economics, history, culture, language and leadership. This education did not really interest the young Darion as he would rather sneak off and get up to no good instead. His position as “chosen heir” has caused some resentment from his older brothers Gavin and Varys, as they feel that they deserve to be the chosen heir instead. This has caused him to grow closer to his elder sister Vanessa, and especially to his younger sister Alyssa to whom he tends to be very protective.
Exploring the world
At his 19th birthday his father announced that in six months he was to travel the world in order to gain the knowledge and life experiences he deemed necessary to take over his role as the head of the company. Darion was against this at first as he did not wish to leave his family, but over time grew more accustomed to the idea and even looked forward to it.
He traveled to destinations like the coastal city of Luskan, the merchant’s domain of Amn, the wealthy mining town of Mirabar and more. Here he picked up a knack for small mercantile operations, wealthy customs and etiquette, logistics, some city management and more importantly how to sway and manipulate other people and events into his favour.
Adventuring
A good while after he started travelling he thought he would try some adventuring and signed on with an adventurers guild. It was during this time he met Asterius and formed a friendship that he would impact him a lot later in his life. 8 months after joining, he accepted a quest for an expedition to clear out a temple of some supposedly ancient civilization worshipping Shar in South Faerûn. This turned out to be a huge mistake as most of the expedition ended up dead and Darion ended up with some ancient curse from a rapier he found at an altar in the temple. The curse is pretty simple in itself as it makes you randomly desire certain items you stumble over to a nearly obsessive degree. The other effect of the curse however, embeded itself deep inside him and started to corrupt his soul and body with energy from the Shadowfell.
A shadowy curse
Feeling that something fundamentally had changed within him, he devoted himself into finding a cure no matter the cost. Acting on a promising lead he got from an old wizard he traveled to Suzail, the capital of Cormyr, in search of answers. There he bought, bribed and manipulated himself access to old, rare and classified texts regarding all sorts of shadow magic and afflictions. Among the texts he found some old scrolls and notes about something called the “Weave” and it’s apparent counterpart the “Shadow Weave” of Shar. Connecting the dots between his shadow curse and Shar, he surmised that his affliction was somehow related to this “Shadow Weave” or whatever it was. If his curse was tied to the “Shadow Weave”, then perhaps it could be countered or at least mitigated by attaching himself to its counterpart the “Weave”? Searching some more, he found an old worn scroll containing some sort of ritual about the “Weave”. Fearing loosing himself to his curse, he performed the ritual and invoked a connection to the “Weave” itself. It seemed to have worked as he could feel the shadowy influence inside himself receeding, but what he did not know was what future consequences this “pact” would entail.
Waterdeep
Considering himself cured of whatever was afflicting him, he spent a few weeks in Suzail wasting away the time drinking, whoring and generally celebrating his new lease on life. After some time he felt compelled to resume his travels and spent most of what money he had left to take the Waterdeep Portal in the city. What awaited him in Waterdeep he would not have imagined even in his wildest dreams.
