Darryl Wilson
Stay At Home Sports Dad / Barbarian
Overview
Darryl Wilson describes himself as a stay at home sports dad. Personality wise, he can be a bit uptight. He likes the rules and sticks to protocol. Once, Nick Close described Darryl as a “narc.” Despite that, Darryl is an overall friendly guy. He introduces himself to everyone he meets, quick to offer a handshake or one of his famous Pale Ales. Darryl is, perhaps unfortunately, someone who will explain a joke when no one laughs at it. He is emotionally restrained, preferring to hide his tears in the privacy of a Charleston Chew. He often experiences a rage when people aren’t listening to him. Darryl is a life-long practicing Catholic. He prays over his rosary when stressed and finds his moral framework from within Catholicism.
There is reason to believe that Darryl hasn’t experienced a lot of love in his life. When Henry Oak kisses him in Episode 1, Darryl “feels love for the first time.” In general, Darryl seems to really struggle with his self image, noting when he puts on the Doodler shirt for the first time that he thinks he looks better than he has in a long time.
Darryl drives a 2013 Honda Odyssey that he affectionately refers to as “The Beast.” When he dials his wife, Carol Wilson, he sings a soft song to the notes of his Nokia phone. Darryl is something of a Charleston Chew addict, going so far as to hide his consumption of them at all costs. One of his favorite movies is 300. Darryl loves The Brady Bunch. He has great admiration for Mike Brady, evidenced by Mike’s appearance in Darryl’s ancestral protectors.
Familial Relationships
- Carol Wilson, wife
- Grant Wilson, son
- Casey Wilson, older sister
History
His dad’s favorite candy was Charleston Chews.
Darryl and his son, Grant, once got a dog named Lincoln. Grant eventually lost this dog, never to be seen again.
In school, Carol was a grade below Darryl. They’re high school/middle school sweethearts. They first began dating when Darryl was a freshman and Carol was an eighth grader, causing a bit of a scandal in their small town.
Darryl disagrees with the choice to make West Rock Elementary’s mascot the Doodler. He thinks the team should be called the Grizzlies, and he made a very buff grizzly bear for the logo. Every time he sees the Doodler it annoys him.
Dad Facts
- Darryl would be head coach of the West Rock Elementary Doodlers if Darnell wasn’t standing in his way.
- Darryl is starting to think that he misses his wife more than she misses him.
- His favorite TV show used to be Bones, but then he saw the pilot for The Finder, and thought that show was way more macho. He was very upset that they canceled it after six episodes.
- The only other woman Darryl has kissed is Carol’s sister Stacy.
- When he caught his father as Santa Clause at eight years old, he believed in Santa for three more years. He just thought his dad was Santa.
- Darryl does not know what a Birkenstock is. He keeps trying to get Henry to explain it.
- Darryl’s older sister, Casey, owns a massively successful brewery up in Northern California. It’s called the Brew Dude (a nickname Darryl used to give to himself). The gimmick is that there are cool dudes on every can of beer. Darryl is resentful about this, always taking Casey’s beer out of the cooler and replacing it with his own.
- Darryl’s favorite holiday is tax day.
- When Grant got into soccer, Darryl wanted to know more about it. He went down to a local pub and that’s where he met his best friends – the Chelsea boys. He’s never told Carol about it because that would mean admitting to her that he drinks at 10 in the morning everyday.
